Administrative Hearing and Medical Interpreter Program
The State Personnel Board (SPB) under Government Code Section 11435.05-65 is responsible for maintaining the list of administrative hearing and medical interpreters and overseeing the Interpreter Program. While the SPB is not required by Government Code Section 11435.05 -65 to conduct the examinations, we recognize the need for new interpreters to take the place of those who are no longer offering interpreter services due to retirement or relocation. Interpreters interested in obtaining certification to interpret at State proceedings are recommended to take the court interpreter examination, as once certified, they are eligible for placement on SPB’s list of interpreters as stipulated in the Government Code. To learn about the court interpreter examination please visit http://www.courts.ca.gov/programs-interpreters.htm. Certified court interpreters may request that their name be placed on the State master list of interpreters by contacting the SPB’s Interpreter Program at Interpreter@spb.ca.gov. Proof of Court certification will be required before placement on the master list of certified interpreters.
Currently there is no other examination to certify medical interpreters. However, the Government Code allows medical interpreters to be provisionally certified for assignments. As information becomes available, it will be posted on this website.
ATTENTION CERTIFIED INTERPRETERS: The renewal application for the certification year that begins July 1, 2011 is currently being mailed. If you do not receive renewal materials from us by April 20, please contact Interpreter@spb.ca.gov Please read the instructions carefully, as the process has changed.
